Counter-Strike: Global Offensive is sold on multiple platforms: the PC (Windows, Mac, and Linux), Playstation 3, and Xbox 360. However, Since the retail release, there have been differences between the PC and console versions.

Differences between PC and Consoles[]

PC Consoles
Start screen Player no need hit any key/button to go main menu. Player need hit to the 'Start' key/button to go to the main menu.
FPS and resolution The resolution can be changed by the user in Help & Options or through the .exe launch options. It can only be launched at its native 1280x720 resolution at a consistent 30 fps.
Matchmaking Unavailable — only community servers can be played online. Available through Xbox Live compatibility (Xbox One only). The PS3 online services have been shut down since 2018 for all games. Meanwhile, the Xbox Live Marketplace is no longer available except for users who already purchased the game.
Updates Since release, there have been many updates, operations, and news announcements. Very minimal updates for the engine.

Other Differences[]

  • PC and Xbox 360 versions are rendered in Direct3D, while the macOS and Playstation 3 version is rendered in OpenGL.
  • The PlayStation 3 version supports the DualShock 3 controller, PlayStation Move or a USB keyboard/mouse, while the Xbox 360 version is limited to a controller.
  • The in-game textures are low quality for optimization purposes, and they cannot be changed by the user (except for arms and weapons).
  • Several sounds have a low sample rate.
  • Assets are stored in a WinRAR .zip file rather than in a .pak package.
  • The console releases use proprietary file formats for their files.
    • VTFs/texture files use the VTFX (.360.vtf) format in the Xbox 360 version.
    • Uses XAudio instead of DirectSound (through Miles Sound System).
    • Shockwave flash .swf files for menu screens are Direct Draw Surface .dds.
    • Portable Network Graphics .png For trademarks.
  • The console versions supports ATI X1000-series GPU.
