Matthew Van Sickler, or more commonly simply Matt, is a level designer for the Counter-Strike Beta. He is the creator of Bunker.

Biography[]

Matt's first venture in the creation of video game content was actually in the form of machinima. In 1996, Matt was part of a Quake clan called the Rangers Clan. One of the clan members had the idea of creating a film based on gameplay clips, and Matt was appointed director of the film simply because he had "the fastest internet connection and a fairly powerful computer to run the server and record the action".[1] On October 26, 1996, the clan released Diary of a Camper, which is commonly considered to be the first known example of machinima.[1]

The Rangers Clan would also produce several other machinima including the Ranger Gone Bad and Torn Apart series. It was during the production of Ranger Gone Bad 3 that Matt would take the dive into level design. Initially, the clan had a ready made Quake level that they were going use for producing the film. However, during production they noticed that they "were writing the story around the map, instead of making the map to fit the story".[2] Therefore, Matt decided to pick up level design so that a custom made map could be used for the film. While Matt would finish his first map to enable further production on the film, the film was never finished due to various issues.[2]

Van Sickler's venture into Counter-Strike mapping in 1999 with Bunker is his only known publicly released map. The map was officially released as part of Beta 2.0. It was included in the official rotation for little over half a year until it was removed in Beta 6.0.
