Overview

Oil (de_oil) was a cut Counter-Strike: Source map for the Bomb Defusal game mode, that was being developed in 2005.[1]

Overview[]

The map is set in an oil station on the banks of the river. It has big open spaces similar to Compound and Port. The map looks mostly complete, but it lacks important game elements such as Buy zones, Bombsites and invisible walls, that would prevent players from venturing out of the map or climbing buildings. There is also a large building in which there is an interior, but which cannot be entered.

Development[]

On July 5, 2005, CS-Nation published an interview with Doug Lombardi and Jess Cliffe related to the future of Counter-Strike: Source.[2] Jess mentioned the development of a brand new map made by Dave Riller, who previously worked on Compound and Port. However, the map was never released, and its fate was unknown for a long time.

In the 2023 leak of Source developer asset repository, a lot of source files of Counter-Strike: Source were included. Among the files included there are decompiled maps including Oil.[3] This map is very similar to the rest of Riller's work and was last modified on the same period as the interview was published,[1] suggesting that this is the map that Cliffe mentioned in interview.
