Thearrel McKinney Jr. is the creator of a few Counter-Strike maps. He got to leave his mark on the Counter-Strike franchise when Ritual Entertainment was working on Counter-Strike: Condition Zero.

Biography[]

Before joining Ritual Entertainment, Thearrel McKinney was an amateur level designer and maintainer of a Quake community level design website called Mean Arena and he created several maps for Quake III Arena. He was hired by Ritual in April 2001 and got to work on several games, including the cancelled The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers PC version and Star Trek: Elite Force II.[1]

Despite having little to no experience working with the Half-Life engine, he designed a few maps and missions for both Counter-Strike: Condition Zero and the Xbox version of Counter-Strike.[2][3] His multiplayer levels never received much popularity though.

Notably he released a few custom single player maps for Counter-Strike: Condition Zero Deleted Scenes post its release. Additionally, he later on decided to release the source for these maps to teach the community how to create custom missions for Deleted Scenes.[4]

In 2008 he founded his own company, Mangled Eye Studios, with focus on first person game development. Things didn't exactly work out however and a Kickstarter campaign was started in May 2012 to collect funds for the development of further titles.[5] The campaign was unsuccessful and as such the company was closed down in June. However, just a year later, in 2013, McKinney started up another game development company called Gray Mantis.[6]
