Overview

Vessel (de_vessel)[1] was a bomb defusal map that was featured in Counter-Strike: Condition Zero during its development.

Overview[]

The map took place on an arctic research vessel[2] located in the middle of the ocean. One of the bomb sites was located in the engine room of the vessel, while the other bomb site was one of the laboratories.[3]

Development[]

Vessel was designed by Gearbox Software employee Josh Jeffcoat while Gearbox Software was working on Counter-Strike: Condition Zero. Jeffcoat thought the setting made designing the map more difficult than normal, since the physical shape of the boat limited the available space.[1] It would end up being one of the most complicated maps in Gearbox Software's design of Counter-Strike: Condition Zero and the map went through several revisions before its design was settled on.[4] Some of the textures featured in the map were made by Marc Schröder.[5]

Vessel was one of the first maps that were revealed to the public.[1] The map made several media appearances and many screenshots of the map are available. In addition, the map was featured in a video by the German gaming magazine PC Games.[6]

When Ritual Entertainment took over development of Counter-Strike: Condition Zero, the map was scrapped. However, the textures and some of the geometry were reused in the Thin Ice single player mission.
